Using data to reduce costs and improve patient outcomes
Over the past decade, hospitals have been looking for a way to provide more patient-centered services, while also taking control of the spiraling cost of care – but this was difficult, since hospitals little visibility into what happened after a patient checked out.
Clarify Health was founded to provide that visibility, with comprehensive analytics that give hospitals new insight into the entire patient journey and a patient-facing application that assists and guides them before, during and after surgical procedures. To create that application, Clarify Health knew it was critical to find the right developer to help.
One of Clarify Health’s main objectives was to get into the marketplace as soon as possible. Big Tomorrow, the design firm they were working with, suggested that CabForward would be a great partner.
Justin Warner, Clarity Health’s CTO says, “We had resources in house, but none with iOS experience. We were impressed with CabForward’s depth of knowledge and that they had a working relationship with our design firm. They immediately put four engineers on the project and were off and running.”
One challenges that Clarify Health identified was the API. “We were developing the API in-house. The API collects a lot of the data that the app presents to the patient. There are often several iterations needed to get the connectivity between the app and API to work the way you want it to.”
CabForward thought it through and designed the app with built-in flexibility. “When CabForward connected Care Pilot to the API, things worked more seamlessly than I’ve ever seen.” Warner was thrilled, particularly since the Clarify team and the CabForward team were located a couple of thousand miles away from each other and the project was conducted entirely over the phone.
One of the biggest hurdles was that a lot of the content displayed in the app is based on the type of surgery and whether a patient is pre-op or post-op. The API serves up the information and the app has to render it in the appropriate way. This meant that CabForward had to design for dynamic content. Warner says, “That is a pretty advanced concept for an app you use on a phone. CabForward did a great job at recognizing the challenge and developing an app that could do this extremely well.”
Easy-to-use technology is a win for hospitals, caregivers and patients
With Care Pilot, everybody wins. Hospitals and caregivers can reduce the cost of care by increasing efficiency, ensuring compliance, and identifying issues before major problems develop. However, ultimately healthcare is about people. Care Pilot excels at providing the in-depth support a patient needs at every point in their journey.
“Care Pilot was initially developed with hip and knee replacements in mind, but the platform is so flexible that it can easily expand for different types of patient journeys.” Warner envisions Care Pilot being used for complex surgeries with long recovery times like heart surgery, guiding women through all phases of pregnancy, long-term management of common diseases like diabetes, and more.
Part of Care Pilot’s success is due to Cab Forward’s willingness to be proactive. Warner says the team jumped right in to understand what the app required from the start – and how it might be used in the future. “They didn’t sit on the sidelines and wait until something was handed off to them. They were part of the design process early on. I think that helped Care Pilot be successful from the beginning.”
