First-time entrepreneur seeks ideal development team
Hinds and his business partner had legal and marketing backgrounds, but no previous development experience. He knew the right development partner was essential to make Polarize the success he knew it could be. “We wanted a beta product so that we could explore some test markets and validate the product. It was critical that the app looked polished and performed seamlessly.”
He also wanted to remain involved during development, making decisions along the way to ensure that the result looked and functioned the way it needed to. Hinds contacted several companies and reviewed proposals. He was shocked to find time after time, that the developers approached the project as a transaction, not a partnership.
“Other companies wanted us to tell them what we wanted, write them a check, and then deliver the app – without having any updates or input into the development process. They didn’t even give us a project plan. There wasn’t any transparency or any focus on building a long-term relationship.”
Everything changed when they contacted CabForward. “I immediately knew that this company was different. Lance Vaughn, CabForward CEO, as well as the Product Manager and a senior developer were all on the initial call. I explained my concerns and I could tell they really listened.”
Expertise and guidance every step of the way
Hinds knew he had a lot to learn and CabForward made the entire process easier right from the start. Hinds says, “Our intern had produced a minimum viable product, so we sent it to CabForward. I was really impressed with the detailed plan I got back from them.” The plan contained a detailed breakdown: what had been done, what changes were required, the associated time and costs, and who would be doing the work. “It was amazingly complete. They even outlined what input and decisions they would need from me, everything. Our Product Manager conveyed it all to me in layman’s terms – she tied it all together.”
One area Hinds calls out as instrumental: improvements to the user interface. “As the people that came up with it, we were too close to it. We couldn’t see the issues. CabForward helped us see it from a user’s perspective and showed how we could improve it.”
Throughout the engagement, the CabForward product team provided the expertise Hinds needed as he made critical decisions about the app. Whenever a major change came up, the team would have what Hinds calls a huddle. “They assessed the proposed change and made sure I understood all of the implications, from a technical standpoint, a user interface standpoint, a roadmap standpoint, a cost standpoint. CabForward’s proactive approach saved my company time and money.”
A true partnership in every way
From the beginning, Hinds had sought a partner that he could rely on now and in the future. He found that partner at CabForward. “They helped us think through our roadmap and prioritize development decisions.”
CabForward CEO, Lance Vaughn, kept a watchful eye on the project – something that Hinds greatly appreciated. “When we were vulnerable to making a potential mistake, Lance would help guide us. For instance, we had to decide whether to source photos from within our app or from outside applications. He explained all the reasons why it made sense to do it from within our app.”
Tests with the beta app in the Dallas area were extremely successful. He’s looking to the future and he is confident that CabForward will help the Polarize team realize the app’s maximum potential. Hinds says that, “Having CEO contact is great. Lance is extremely knowledgeable and dedicated. He is always interested in our plans and where we want to take this next.”
What is Polarize?
It all started when Kemar Hinds wanted to find a fun spot to hang out for the evening. There were lots of apps that listed places to go, but not any that showed him what was going at that moment. Hinds ended up driving from place to place all night, looking for where the crowds were.
That frustrating night provided the seed of a fantastic idea. He realized that everywhere he went, people were taking photos and capturing video. There had to be a way to put all that information to good use. Polarize lets users upload photos showing where they are and what they are doing, so other users can check out what’s going on – in real time. Polarize stores the photos in a collage that is constantly updated, allowing users to see where the fun is right now – all conveniently from their mobile phone.
“CabForward was sensational. When we launched the beta version of our product, we got nothing but positive feedback from users.”
